The Scirocco UHF (Ultra High Frequency) RFID systems comprise Readers, Antennae, Tags and Accessories. The systems make use of the latest radio technology and operate under the established standard ISO 18000-6C (C1G2). They are highly optimised in relation to performance, tolerance to demanding environments and coexistence with other systems.
Scirocco UHF systems offer a number of unique features;
- Low-cost tags
- Card-shaped as well as heavy-duty tags
- Long reading- and writing range
- High-capacity zone
- Simultaneous reading of multiple tags
- Protected band
- ISO standard air protocol (18000-6C)
- High passage speed (200 km/h)
- No batteries – friendliness to the environment
- Easy installation and use
- High reliability
The UHF systems have no battery in the tags. Radio signals and antenna technology are used for tag reading and writing, as well as to energize tags. The signals are generated by a one-chip radio in the reader and are specially coded to efficiently carry information, as well as to distinguish from other radio sources. The one-chip radio is also used to receive tag signals and features advanced signal processing. Properly designed antennae magnify the reading signals from the tag in a high-capacity reading zone that is tolerant to tag passage speed and position.
The systems operate in the UHF band, i.e. at about 900 MHz, which is a frequency that corresponds to 30 cm wavelength. The authorised UHF RFID frequency bands of the world span from 865 – 954 MHz depending on region, for instance 865 – 868 MHz in Europe, Africa, SE Asia and Middle East. UHF RFID systems are very robust against disturbances from other sources thanks to operation in a frequency band that is reserved for RFID only.
The systems can read tags at up to 10 m distance, while writing is possible at up to about 4 m. They are directional with a relatively wide communication zone, as defined by the antenna in use.
With high integration and low power consumption in the tag, UHF systems are also characterised by very cheap and robust tags.
Scirocco UHF systems have a highly functional design and are designed for demanding environments, i.e. with high IP- and EMC specifications as well as regarding tolerance to mechanical stress.
With a wavelength and power about the same as a mobile phone, signals can pass through snow, rain, smoke and layers of dust particles without significant attenuation. Water has in all practical cases negligible influence on the signals, and tags are available that can be mounted directly to metal without performance degradation.
Scirocco UHF systems are typically used in closed-loop flows with large and valuable objects, such as in access/parking and transport logistics applications with cars, trucks, buses and trains. These objects generally need identification at more than 0.5 m distance, at the same time as the passage position can vary largely and the speed is high in many cases. The high-capacity reading zone, the robust product design and the freedom to place tags on metal makes installation easy.
